Willow Grove Chapter

The Willow Grove Chapter is pleased to offer two student scholarship awards each year, the Eleanor Roberts Fund, and ASTERA. Information for each scholarship follows.

Eleanor Roberts Fund

The Eleanor Roberts Fund was established in 2001 with a donation given to the chapter by Mr. Dan Roberts, son of Eleanor Roberts who was a beloved music teacher in the Delaware Valley. The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships to music students in need of financial help in order to continue music studies or to attend summer music camp.

Each year the committee awards up to (2) scholarships of $400 to music students. Since the fund was established, many of the scholarships awarded have gone to our very own teachers in our membership. Money has been raised for the fund though generous individual donations and fund-raising events such as benefit concerts, where some of our very talented members have performed.

Our current chairman of the fund is Mr. Alex Ramirez.

ASTERA Star spirit: You are a Bright Shining Star forever bright with your Extraordinary Mind, Heart and Soul.

THE ASTERA FOUNDATION MUSIC AWARD

The ASTERA FOUNDATION was established by Despina and Steven Thomas of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in loving memory of their son Antonios who died of a rare form of leukemia in 2006 at age 13.  This Foundation fundraises for Leukemia Research and also gives emotional and financial support to families who have children that are ill with cancer.  In addition, the ASTERA FOUNDATION grants Academic and Music AWARDS to children and teens exhibiting ASTERA values and spirit.

What is the ASTERA STAR SPIRIT?  -- ASTERA signifies the brightest shining star that shines forever bright.  The child or teen that holds the ASTERA Spirit has an extraordinary humanitarian heart, high ideals, high standards, making a positive difference in other people's lives.  The young musician with the ASTERA Spirit consistently holds these high ideals and integrity in their practice, taking no short-cuts. They demonstrate their love and enthusiasm for music, always stretching for the best.  It is also possible that the student may have sought out ways to share their love of music, thereby, making a positive contribution to the world around them.

Qualifications --The ASTERA Foundation will present two $1000 Music Awards annually to music students who exhibit the ASTERA spirit. These students will be Kindergarten through Junior year in high school, studying a musical instrument/ and/or studying voice.  A Certificate Award will be presented to the student and the award monies will be subsequently given to the students' teacher(s) or to the music institution at which the student is studying.  The monetary award is to be used solely for the Awardees' musical studies.  This award is not need-based and it is not just reserved for the most talented students.

Two awardees will be chosen by a Committee comprising members of the Willow Grove Chapter of the PA Music Teachers Association.

Who can apply – Students of member teachers, who have never previously received the award -- (Kindergarten through Junior Year in high school who embody the ASTERA spirit) of the Willow Grove Chapter of the PA Music Teachers Association.
